Background

Gregorio Elemaga Memorial Elementary School, established in the 1960s, is located in Zamboanguita, Negros Oriental. The school suffered significant structural damage due to two consecutive earthquakes. The beams, columns, and walls of the classroom buildings developed severe cracks, rendering them unsafe for use. For a period of 6-8 months, the school had to use canopies as temporary learning spaces.

Currently, the school operates with seven temporary learning spaces constructed from light materials such as bamboo, plywood, and other repurposed materials. However, these makeshift classrooms face numerous challenges. There is no electrical layout in the school, leaving the rooms without any lighting. Additionally, the classrooms are not properly elevated, causing rainwater to flood the interiors during downpours. As a result, students often have to pump out water from their classrooms, disrupting their learning environment. Overall, the current classroom conditions are far from conducive to effective education.
